Why is black stool

Stool is darker or black in color, often triggering anxiety. Black stool can occur due to food that you consume or related diseases that you might suffer. Human feces or stools are metabolic waste from the digestive system that can be either solid or semi-solid (soft). Stool is normally brown. But under certain conditions, you can experience black stool.

Various Causes of Black Stool

Many factors may cause black stool. These factors include:
  • Eat certain foods

  • Black stool is not always an indication of a serious illness, because consumption of certain foods can also cause black stool. Consumption of dark blue, purple, and black foods such as blueberries and beets, for example, can make your stool black.
  • Take certain medications

  • In addition to the influence of food, certain drugs can also cause black stool. For example, bismuth subsalicylate drugs contribute to the black color of your stool. Consumption of supplements containing iron can also make black stool.
  • GI bleeding

  • In some cases, black stool is a sign of a serious disease, such as bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal (upper gastrointestinal bleeding). Bleeding may occur in the esophagus or stomach. In addition to black stool, other symptoms will usually be accompanied by vomiting blood or vomiting black liquid resembling a coffee solution, stomach cramps, shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue.
  • Cirrhosis

  • Severe cirrhosis can cause black stool. This happens because the blood flowing to the liver is blocked by scar tissue that forms in the liver. This results in a buildup of blood in the blood vessels around the esophagus and stomach. The blocked blood in the arteries can rupture and cause internal bleeding. Signs of internal bleeding can be seen from the condition of vomit or feces of sufferers.
If a person does not consume the foods and drugs mentioned above, but excludes black stools, then there is likely to be a health problem. To find out clearly what causes it and how to handle it appropriately, you should immediately consult a doctor.
